Paging Dr. Croid by CreatureBox Paging Dr. Croid by CreatureBox
Early on in the projects, we have to work out the look and feel of both the new characters and the game itself. In this case, after the team was happy with the character's concept, the question was 'would it work in 3D'. So I also built this model to see if we could pull of some of the new shape logic we were experimenting with.

I really find it remarkable when someone has both conceptual and 3D skill sets. It always appears that it's either one or the other, I've hardly seen many artists manage both. (at-least on deviantART)

The design really translated well into the model. Love the expressions at the bottom as well.

Thank you for sharing your work, truly inspiring stuff. It's great to see some industry standard art on here :)

What program did you use for the 3D model? Is that hand drawn or the use of an actual 3D program?

I constantly struggle with the amazing graphic styles that can be accomplished in 2D that don't always translate exactly the way you'd like them to in 3D. Nice rendition! Keep cranking out the awesomeness!

The team's creative process is astounding. Yet I often find myself wondering questions along the lines of "how the HECK do they get those suits on" whenever I see stuff like this. Curse my detail-oriented mind. >w<

Anyways, I see you've mentioned in the comics that you don't use rigs when making things. Due to my not being a 3D designer and therefore unfamiliar with the lingo or the usage, I'm curious:

How fast could you create a design like this WITH rig as opposed to WITHOUT rig, if you were adept at it? What would rigging do that your process couldn't, besides save time?

Rigging is the process in which you add a cg skeleton and controls the the 3d mesh to allow posing and animation as well as game engine manipulation. Its a very specialized craft and requires a very high level of precision and understanding of both code, and anatomical breakdowns. Rigs can be very simple (1 joint perhaps) all the way to a rig that is so smart or subtle that it could be used for a cg film or something of equal caliber. The rigging process doesn't affect an artist or modeller much if they have worked with a rigger (person who rigs 3d assets), but for someone who doesn't understand the limitations of a cg rig, it can lead to enumerous revisions. If you are a modeller, you need to consider the usage of your asset just as much as the form of the model. Once you have done it for a little while, it becomes second nature and you build your models with those requirements in mind.

Most game companies, and cg houses have a specialized person who works solely on rigs. In the past, people could do it all themselves. Most students have ample time to do so. But in a production environment, a team can't allow for that kind of bottleneck of time, so now-a-days, a person with great skill is employed to make everyone's life a lot easier when it comes to bringing these things to life.

That answers a lot of questions, thank you.

So I assume you guys have a rigger specialist to help you out in finalizing the cg animations in terms of proper movement? If so, my God their life must be pretty difficult every time a new game crops up. X3

Lots of free time necessary, no?

was all this modeled / textured in the same program?

:iconcreaturebox:
CreatureBox Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Oh no. Honestly, I probably use 8 different programs for various parts of this process. Some are proprietary, and others are off the shelf. But Photoshop and Maya are the essentials, in a pinch, that's all you'd need.

Thanks :) Your textures just looked super clean (and I personally can't see any seams) so I wasn't sure if you used Zbrush or a similar program for that. Are they just flat colors with lighting to create shadows?

It's great to see how the artwork comes to life in the game. I like seeing side-by-side comparisons like that.

I think that the face would look a little bit more accurate to the drawing if the eyebrows were above the glasses, though. Not having the bushy gray eyebrows visible makes the doctor look a lot younger.

I make a lot of the game models. In this case, this is the in game model rendered in Mental Ray. I got to spend a few extra polys on him because he was only shown in cinematics.
